I am planning to go to Greece but I’m already afraid that my list of things to take is too long. What do I absolutely need for a six-week trip? And what can I do without?
Before you start stuffing your bags, remember that you can buy everything from seasickness remedies to another bathing suit once you’re in Greece.
That said, I’d first reserve suitcase space for your nicely broken-in walking shoes, an absorbing novel or two (island hopping requires a fair amount of ferry waiting), a trusted brand of quality sunscreen and an informative guide book. If you snap photos, a polarizing filter would be a smart item to bring along. It can be a hard item to find abroad, and you’ll want it when you take pictures in the sun.
If you’ll be spending a lot of time swimming in the silky Aegean Sea, think only of the barest essentials — swimsuit, rubber thongs, a light cotton dress to throw over your suit, sunglasses and a straw hat that can survive its journey in the suitcase.
Bring a windbreaker for boat rides, binoculars for your archeological explorations and a simple dress (the one you throw over your swimsuit can serve double duty) for your visits to churches and monasteries.
Most importantly, start whittling down that packing list now. When you’re dashing to catch the last ferry to Naxos, you’ll be grateful you did.
